Prices and Ordering Information
These wide-ranging workbooks approach studying and learning the writing process from a
unique and critical perspective. The exercises have been designed to help students to first
organize their thinking when tackling a writing task, and then to logically craft compositions
so that they are clear, direct, and compelling.
Students’ confidence in evaluating and revising
their own writing and that of others will also be boosted as they study how each composition
meets or does not meet the expectations of a basic set of writing guidelines. The
workbook is organized in this way:
- Students begin by reviewing the elements of good writing in such areas as organization,
beginning a composition, interesting and descriptive language, details,
proper sentence and paragraph construction, and ending a composition. They are
then walked through a detailed sample exercise.
- Students are presented with twelve sample exercises in which they are encouraged
to recognize and critique organization, relevance, elaboration, tone, purpose, and
focus, as well as correct sentence construction and appropriate use of details and dialogue.
They are then given a similar writing prompt in an appropriate writing genre
to apply these same skills of evaluation and critical thinking to their own writing.
- In the final section of the book, students are given six lessons in which they are
expected to read a brief composition and rewrite it, based almost exclusively on
their expanded understanding of the elements of good writing as they’ve practiced
them. They are then expected to answer questions related to their rewritten compositions,
evaluating their own writing as they would anyone else’s.
Designed to target the writing types presented on the DSTP, there is no better
practice or preparation on the market today!
