Throughout history, teaching children the importance of character has been the shared
responsibility of parents, teachers, and members of the community at large. Today, due to an
increasingly disjointed familial and community support system, the responsibility of teaching
these crucial lessons has fallen on you: the teachers.
What is character education? Character education is a learning process that enables students
and adults in a school community to study, contemplate, and practice core ethical values such
as respect, justice, civic virtue and citizenship, and responsibility for self and others. Upon
such values, we form the attitudes and actions that are the hallmarks of safe, healthy,
informed, and tolerant communities that in turn serve as the foundation for our society. In fact, the United States Congress has long recognized the importance of character development in schools.
This series of workbooks enables students to examine and consider issues of
morality and ethics pertinent and applicable to their lives today, and, at the same time, provides
them with an opportunity to develop and improve crucial language art skills.
Topics include: Honesty, It's Really Murder, Our Physical Being, Success, Observing, Love and Devotion, It's a Joke, Making Judgments, Stereotyping, Tackling Problems, The Laws and You, Big and Small, Impressions, A Step Ahead, Goals, Wealth, Manners, Proud of One's Country, Old and New, Names, Rivalry, and Man's Best Friend.
