This workbook describes, in abbreviated form, the early history and culture of Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Zaire (Congo), South Africa, Angola, and Chad.
The history passages in this workbook were selected to give the reader a sense of the time
and place they report. While not comprising a comprehensive history, the topics will
support and enlarge an ongoing study of other nations’ histories.
Some passages contain original source material. Reading a journal entry, an eyewitness
account, or an important letter can add an immediate dimension to the facts of history.
Students might also do research to find posters, copies of famous works of art with
historical themes, and magazine or newspaper pictures or photographs related to the time
period or historical event being studied.
Reading comprehension is also addressed in this workbook. The last question at the end of
all passages is open-ended. Some questions require an understanding of the passage.
Others simply use the theme of the passage as the basis for an invitation to creative
writing. If you would like your students to get more
writing experience, the open-ended questions will work very well for this purpose.
Many of the multiple-choice questions simply require direct feedback of information given
in the passage. Some, however, require some thought and analysis. These questions should help to identify with which skills students need the most help.
